Why is this blog called wandering in the Land of Nod?
I want to reassure you all that I’ve not murdered anyone or been sent into exile. I get on well with my brothers and sister and I don’t live far from where I was born. I do like to wander, but in the Land of Nod? Really?
Maybe you know the ancient story of Cain and Abel.

Cain had to leave his home and everyone he knew to live in The Land of Nod.
The story goes that Cain murdered his brother and left his home and everyone he knew to live in the land of Nod. He wandered as an exile and fugitive.

Cain’s story ended better than it began. He built a city, found a wife and had a son. Not bad for an incomer in exile.
Now, my life story is the opposite to Cain’s. I’ve lived a settled life. I’m in a happy marriage, I’m friends with my children and I’ve got a wider circle of friends, some of whom I’ve known nearly all my life. I’ve always had a strong sense of God and trying to follow Jesus makes sense to me. I’ve fulfilled some childhood dreams and I’ve reached retirement in good health. I don’t want to sound smug, but that’s the way it is.

My wandering has often been lit up by light and beauty.
And yet! And yet, I’ve often felt lost, alone and unsure, as if I’m wandering around a desert wondering which way to go and feeling like I’ve missed something.
Do you know the feeling? If only I could just find that one thing I’m meant to be doing …
What I want to do is remember some of the people, places and events that have helped me find my way and share them with you. It won’t be in a great chronological order. I’m not good at chronology. It will tend to follow seasons, because I am very fond of seasons.
Have you ever felt lost in a crowd, unsure if you’re doing the right thing or thinking you’re the only one who doesn’t get it?
Wander well, Mandy.
Things I love:
- Finding a path.
- Autumn and winter flowers.
- Dappled sunlight.
If you want to read the story of Cain and Abel, it’s in the Bible, in the book of Genesis chapter 4.
