In which I wake up to cool air, cloudy skies and raindrops.

So, on August 4th in the East Midlands of England, I woke up feeling comfortable in my bed. This was a surprise. I could have stayed there; it was so pleasant lying under a duvet. This was a strange sensation this summer and happiness crept into my mind.
With a mug of tea in hand, I ventured out into the front garden at 7:30am. My arms noted a cool movement of air, not quite a breeze, which felt kind, soothing and refreshing.
My eyes noted unfamiliar sights. There were drops of water on the car windows and the burgundy leaves of our smoke tree. Dark clouds gathered protectively overhead.

When I touched the brittle privet hedge, my fingers came away damp.
I smelt the dankness of rain in the air and the earth.
This was like finding a new world after months of drought.
I was happy to see that Aster, after weeks of keeping her flower bud tightly closed had opened her face to the cool air and quenching rain.

The long, still dry grass was slightly bent over and alive with tiny, lively insects darting from stalk to stalk.
Like the insects, I was energised and I sat down to write. By my side, a potted ivy perked up and shone more greenly.

Cosmos opened up her fuchsia pink petals while her feathery green leaves stood up and reached out to the cool, damp air. Occasional raindrops plopped onto my arms and the pages of my notebook.

My life was re awakened and I was glad to share with the air, the plants and insects, that soft refreshing rain.
The rain didn’t last, so I’m sure I’ll be back to writing about heat and drought again soon, but for today I hope you find some refreshment.
If you’ve felt any rain, what did it feel like? I’d love to know.
Wander well,
Mandy.
